CDC releases updated guidelines for mosquito control
Emergency Management Alert, May 10, 2005
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released new guidance for mosquito control in an attempt to minimize the risk of West Nile Virus infection this summer.
The CDC recommends products containing picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus-two ingredients that are proven to offer effective protection against mosquito bites. Repellents containing DEET continue to be an effective weapon as well, according to the CDC.
Picaridin, which is a popular repellent in Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Asia, is being distributed for the first time in the United States. The oil of eucalyptus is a plant-based mosquito repellent. It is available in many different products.
