Short of a last-minute settlement, a strike set for today by workers of Angelica Textile Services plants could disrupt laundry cleaning at healthcare facilities.

Nationwide, workers in at least seven Angelica plants will hit the picket lines if the Unite Here union and the company can't reach an agreement on health and safety concerns and benefits. Eight other plants have agreed to honor striking workers. Angelica Textile Services, based in Alpharetta, GA, operates 35 laundries that serve more than 1,000 healthcare settings, including hospitals.

Workers at Angelica allegedly must handle linens soiled with blood or that have needles accidentally left in the folds, according to Unite Here. The union also alleges that Angelica doesn't consistently provide workers with hepatitis B vaccinations.

Angelica argues that the union has conducted an unfair campaign against the company for 16 months.
