Acid spill sends 16 to AZ hospitals

Emergency Management Alert, February 8, 2005

A truck traveling through Phoenix last week leaked more than 110 gallons of hyrdrofluorosilic acid forcing evacuations and 16 people to local hospitals, The Arizona Republic reported.

The 16 people, including the truck's driver, were under evaluation at local hospitals.

Hydrofluorosilic acid is an industrial byproduct used in the fluoridation of water and in dry cleaning. Trace amounts of arsenic and lead usually are found with it. Acid can cause injuries similar to burns, but usually only if people touch it, officials said.

The spill wasn't discovered until after 10 a.m. The city warned more than 9,000 people in nearby areas to stay inside, if possible. Streets along the driver's route were power-washed.
