San Diego healthcare organizations receive $3 million grant

San Diego County healthcare organizations accepted $3 million in federal grants last week to boost disease detection and biological attack preparation, the North County Times reported.

The $3 million will go to hospitals, community clinics, and other healthcare providers in the San Diego County area.

"We have a lot of resources coming in because we are at high risk for some sort of attack," Nancy Bowen, MD, the county's chief public health officer told the Times. "We have been able to build a good infrastructure."

San Diego County's has significant risk for an attack due to the high number of ports, military bases, a nuclear plant, and proximity near the Mexican border.

Since the September 11, 2001, attacks, the country has received more the $15 million in grants used toward equipment, supplies, and building a network to monitor local disease outbreaks.
