Volunteers the next step in disaster response

Emergency Management Alert, February 22, 2005

Bucks County in Pennsylvannia is looking for a few good volunteers to help out during catastrophes, especially terrorist attacks, The Intelligencer reported.

The county wants to use volunteers as part of a medical reserve corps.

While area hospitals and emergency crews are ready to deal with disasters and accidents, terrorism adds a new element to disaster response, Gordian Ehrlacher, acting director of the county's health department, told the Intelligencer.

The proposed reserve corps would be people without medical backgrounds to help with organizational work. However, the county doesn't intend to unleash volunteers to disaster scenes without training. A $40,000 grant is earmarked to train the medical reserve corps.
