FEMA gives $6.7 million for new disaster response trucks

Emergency Management Alert, February 22, 2005

The Federal Emergency Management Agency launched a $6.7 million program last week to speed up the response capabilities of it Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMAT).

"We are excited about providing our disaster medical teams with these new trucks and the positive effect it will have on their ability to deploy to a disaster," said Michael D Brown, under secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response. "These new trucks will help our medical teams respond to disasters within 12 hours."

The $6.7 million will fund 93 trucks to be delivered to 31 DMATs in the country. The trucks haul DMATs' field tents, generators, medical equipment, and supplies. Every DMAT team will also receive a refrigerator truck to store pharmaceuticals.

DMATs deploy to disaster sites with sufficient supplies and equipment to sustain themselves for a period of 72 hours while providing medical care at a fixed or temporary medical care site.
