Nebraska hospital opens bioterrorism unit
Emergency Management Alert, March 15, 2005
The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha unveiled a state-of-the art facility last week to help battle potential bioterrorism attacks, television station WOWT reported.
The facility was dubbed a "national treasure" by Julie Gerberding, MD, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The biocontainment unit contains a negative pressure system that allows air into, but not out of, the facility. The air is cleaned with special filters in the ceiling 15 times an hour, WOWT reported.
The new system gives the hospital an ability to manage deadly and transmittable diseases. There are five rooms and 10 beds to deal with diseases like anthrax, botulism, plague, smallpox, Sars, and avian flu.
"This is truly an example of the kind of thing we'd like to see our whole nation accomplish," Gerberding said.
Staff members underwent specialized training to use the facility.
