CDC to limit handling of dangerous flu strains

Emergency Management Alert, April 26, 2005

Federal health officials plan to restrict the number of laboratories that can handle deadly flu viruses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This news comes one month after the World Heath Organization (WHO) learned that Cincinnati-based Meridian Bioscience distributed test kits containing the deadly H2N2 strain of flu virus to thousands of labs around the world.

Labs destroyed every shipped sample. But the scare sheds light on what the WHO and the CDC consider a real threat-deadly flu viruses in irresponsible hands.

The CDC says its updated guidelines will limit the handling of dangerous flu strains to labs equipped with extra protection for workers.
