Water unusable in NC hospital

Emergency Management Alert, April 12, 2005

Authorities told workers and patients in six buildings at UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Hospitals not to drink the water last Wednesday after contractors damaged a nearby water main, according to The News and Observer in Raleigh, N.C.

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority advised people not to use its water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or preparing food until water quality tests came back.

The damage, which occurred while a contractor was working on a steam tunnel project, stirred up particles that have settled in the mains over time, causing discoloration of the water and producing air bubbles.

Bottled water was provided to the six nearby medical buildings.
