MI community may launch AM disaster radio station
Emergency Management Alert, April 19, 2005
Officials in a Michigan community are looking to launch a new AM radio station to inform the public about local disaster-related news, reports The Detroit News.
The low-powered spot on the dial would initially provide coverage only for the citizens of Farmington Hills, a suburb of Detroit. The station would offer continuous emergency updates, and prerecorded information to walk listeners through setting up a 72-hour emergency kit. Individuals would also hear what to do in the event of severe weather.
Local officials are discussing using a dispatch center to send signals to signs in the town that would alert motorists to turn their dial to the AM station when and if a disaster strikes.
Farmington Hills is waiting to hear if a grant from the Office of Domestic Preparedness can help pay for the service, which will cost between $17,000 and $24,000.
