Two leading plastic surgery organizations have announced the launch of a new Web site dedicated to education, alleviating confusion and concerns about breast implants, and providing safety information about breast surgery.

The site, http://www.breastimplantsafety.org, was launched by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

It will offer "objective and medically-grounded information" on both silicone and saline-filled breast implants, according to a statement on the ASAPS Web site.

"The goal [of the Web site] is to give women a reliable resource as they investigate the vast amount of often confusing, and sometimes inaccurate, information available online about breast implants," said Peter Fodor, president of the ASAPS, in the statement.

The site will also offer a history of implants, safety information, and information on the latest medical research.

"Deciding to have plastic surgery takes careful consideration," said Scott Spear, MD, president of the ASPS, in the statement. "We want to give women the most accurate information so they can be empowered to make the best decision."
