A broken oxygen valve closed not only a hospital emergency room but nearby buildings in Redwood City, CA, on Tuesday, the San Mateo Daily Journal reported.

A 6,000-gallon liquid oxygen tank ruptured when a piece of ice fell off during a routine de-icing process at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.

A cloud of fog covered one block of the campus and even the start of a car engine could have resulted in a fire, Redwood City Fire Chief Gerry Kohlmann told the Journal.

The fire department spent the evening monitoring the leak and waiting for compressed gas experts to arrive.
