Mobile hospital the next response to terror
Emergency Management Alert, January 25, 2005
Healthcare officials hope a mobile hospital will be the next great aid in response to terror events and tragedies, WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC, reported.
North Carolina's Healthcare System's MED-1 is a level one trauma center housed on a tractor trailer. The 1,000-square-foot unit has 14 patient beds, an operating room, an intensive care unit, a pharmacy, x-ray, and lab facilities.
"We're the first program in the world that we know of that has actually produced a full-scale hospital treatment facility on wheels," Tom Blackwell, MD, who is the MED-1 medical director, told WYFF.
Another truck follows the mobile hospital and carries additional gear to accommodate an extra 88 patients.
The MED-1 is the prototype for the Department of Homeland Security and can treat patients within 20 minutes of arrival to an incident. The mobile hospital also includes a special filtration system that allows it to operate in biologically hazardous exposure areas.
