A variety of environment of care hot spots came up during last week's surveyor training held at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' (JCAHO) headquarters.

Among the items surveyors, including the JCAHO's new engineering surveyors, learned about were:
* a new requirement expected to come out later this year that will mandate that hospitals track the competency of people who complete the Statement of Conditions (SOC)
* inspection of fire dampers, which has been a problem in some surveys
* checking whether hospitals use interim life safety measures when there is a Life Safety Code deficiency noted in the SOC's plan for improvement
* ideas for tracer topics within the environment of care

Look for more details on these and other concerns in upcoming issues of Briefings on Hospital Safety and Healthcare Life Safety Compliance.
