Train crash produces deadly toxic spill

Emergency Management Alert, January 13, 2005

A deadly train crash in South Carolina last week released toxic vapors forcing residents from their homes, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Cleanup crews spent the weekend trying to stop chlorine gas from leaking out of the wrecked train car. At least eight people died and more than 250 became ill after the freight train carrying gas crashed near a textile mill last Thursday. The greenish-yellow fog seared people's eyes and lungs, the AP reported.

The spill forced residents within a one-mile radius to evacuate.
