Emergency Management Alert, January 13, 2005

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported last week that damage from hurricanes resulted in 68 major federal disaster declarations in 2004-the most in a single year in almost a decade.

A record-setting 27 total major disasters were declared in hurricane-related damage in 15 states, FEMA reported. Figures show that $4.85 billion of more than $5.53 billion was expended for hurricane relief in disaster aid.

Aside from Florida, 14 other states received hurricane aid. Even at the close of 2004, hurricane recovery efforts were still in effect in Florida.
