Study shows bioterrorism preparedness still has long way to go

Emergency Management Alert, December 20, 2004

Trusts for America's Health (TFAH) released a second study last week that showed public health departments still have much to do in order to protect the country from a bioterror attack, even three years since the September 11 attacks.

The report examined 10 key areas indicating a state's preparedness level and rated the state on a scale of one to 10. Over two-thirds of the states achieved a score of six or less, including Washington D.C.

Florida and North Carolina scored as the most prepared with nine points out of 10. Alaska and Massachusetts scored as the least prepared receiving a three out of 10.

The scores show that preparedness is still behind initial goals and expectations, TFAH reports. The report revealed that many basic bioterrorism detection, diagnosis, and response effort were still not in place.
