Statistics gathered from ambulatory care facilities contributed to a new proposal for improving healthcare that came before the Oklahoma Joint Legislative Task Force on Patient Safety this week.
On Monday, according to the Oklahoma City Journal-Record, the task force reviewed three propositions to improve the safety of patients and the efficiency of healthcare within the state. One of the proposed new measures was the enhancement of a state-run database already maintained by the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
Currently, the Department's Healthcare Information Division monitors inpatient hospital discharges, outpatient and ambulatory surgery center vital statistics, and other data. In addition to this information, the proposal calls for the collection of patient safety information from these same venues, in an effort to link the data together to provide comprehensive tracking of a patient's complete medical history with different institutions.
Other proposals heard by the task force included a plan from Tulsa-based Physicians Total Care that would call on doctors themselves to dispense medications directly at the patient's point of care, rather than sending patients to pharmacists; and the initiation of a pay-for-performance system devised by Okalahoma City-based providers Physician Direct.
