HHS Secretary Thompson resigns, warns of terrorist attack

Emergency Management Alert, December 9, 2004

The Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson resigned last week and warned the US about terrorist attacks on the food supply, the seniorjournal.com reported.

President George Bush responded to Thompson's warning by noting that as a large country many things could inflict harm. "We've made a lot of progress in protecting our country, and there's more work to be done, and this administration is committed to doing it," Bush said.

In particular an attack on the food supply worries Thompson "every single night," he said in his resignation speech. Despite increased inspections of food imports, only a small amount of food is tested, he said. "For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do," Thompson said. "We are importing a lot of food from the Middle East, and it would be easy to tamper with that."
