A stroke patient at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, FL, died on November 7 after she slid under a padded belt restraint that strangled her, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

Edna Buice, 82, had suffered a stroke several weeks earlier paralyzing her right side. Hosptial staff secured Buice with the restraint that fastened around her waist. While unattended, Buice somehow slipped out of the wheelchair.

A nurse later found her sitting on the floor in front of the wheelchair with the restraint caught around her neck, the Times reported.

Bayfront is investigating the death. In the meantime, the hospital stopped using that type of restraint and will review whether other safety changes need to be made, hospital spokeswoman Kanika Tomalin told the Times.

An autopsy showed a pair of red lines across the front of Buice's neck. The medical examiner classified her death as an accidental asphyxiation.
