Some Chicago area hospitals no longer allow families to videotape baby deliveries, citing hospital safety, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Public perceptions thought the ban was to protect hospitals against lawsuits and liability issues, but hospital officials say the ban has more to do with safety.

"We found that it is better for the mother and father if we focus on the mom [at] that point," says a spokeswoman for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, which implemented the ban in 2002. "It can be distracting to have someone videotaping."

The hospitals also say they don't want anything to interfere with medical procedures as another reason for the ban.
