Volunteer nurses make a difference in hurricane-worn Florida

Emergency Management Alert, October 4, 2004

Florida nurses worn out from the hurricane-ravaged state have received a helping hand from traveling nurses, the AHA News reported.

Volunteers have come from Virginia, South Carolina, California, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Colorado, along with 16-member teams in place from Iowa and Oklahoma, Monica Rutkowski, a member of the Florida Department of Health's Public Health Nursing Team, told AHA News.

Last week the American Hospital Association requested hospitals help locate nurses willing to work in Florida's hardest-hit areas. The Florida State Board of Nursing granted temporary licenses to the out-of-state nurses so they could work at hospitals, health clinics, and special needs shelters, Rutkowski said.
