More public education necessary in terrorism response

Emergency Management Alert, September 20, 2004

A study released last week by the New York Academy of Medicine showed that the American public needs education in terrorism response.

The study reported that only two-fifths of Americans would visit a public vaccination site after a smallpox outbreak, and only three-fifths would remain in an undamaged building after a dirty bomb explosion, the AHA news reported.

Generally, the public is reluctant to follow instructions, the study showed. Not only would vaccine safety concerns keep people away from a vaccination site, but the public wants to avoid strangers during a smallpox outbreak.
