More than 2,000 California hospital patients may have been exposed to hepatitis B and C, due to unclean surgical instruments, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported.

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center in Ontario sent letters to the patients this week to warn them of possible hepatitis exposure. The patients underwent gastrointestinal procedures, such as colonoscopies, between Oct. 30, 2003, and May 3, 2004, hospital spokesman Richard Drumn said.

The hospital offered free hepatitis screenings to those patients. However, hospital officials said it was too early to tell whether anyone was infected.
