St. Louis-based Ascension Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in the U.S., last week entered into a partnership with United Surgical Partners International (USPI) of Dallas. The move, according to medical business Web site http://www.modernphysician.com, will allow Catholic health system Ascension to move into the ambulatory surgery center market.

USPI isn't a stranger to the union of for-profit and not-for-profit health systems, as the company currently operates 70 ambulatory surgery centers around the nation, 41 of which are jointly owned by not-for-profit systems.

To date, Ascension has had, as its primary focus, acute care hospitals-the system operates 67 such institutions in 20 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to acute care, Ascension provides long-term care, community health services, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and residential care through a spiritually centered, holistic approach.

In a press release announcing the joint venture issued by USPI, Anthony R. Tersigni, Ascension's president and chief executive officer, stated, "We believe our affiliation with United Surgical Partners is complementary to our mission to serve all, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. The facilities that we will jointly develop and operate in partnership with local physicians will provide accessible, quality healthcare while also allowing people with limited financial resources to receive needed surgery in their communities."
