SD hospital under investigation

Emergency Management Alert, September 6, 2004

The Department of Homeland Security investigated last week a Keloland, South Dakota, hospital for suspicious activity, the Associated Press reported.

Federal and state investigators are examining suspicious activity caught on the hospital's security cameras, although they won't give specific details about the footage.

"A call came into my office and it was from a person who saw something or heard something that just wasn't right," said South Dakota Homeland Security Director John Burheim.

A couple weeks ago, the government issued a nationwide terrorism alert that terrorists may target VA hospitals.

Many suspicious activity reports turn out to be nothing, but Burheim said he takes each one seriously.

"We need to increase [our] security posture," Burheim said. "[We need to] do everything to make sure everything of importance is protected. Hospitals are certainly stepping up to the plate like other business in securing their facilities."
