Florida hospitals deal with hurricane aftermath

Emergency Management Alert, August 24, 2004

Hurricane Charley caused major disruption to Florida hospitals, the AHA News reported.

At least two hospitals on Florida's Gulf Coast closed and several can only provide emergency services, following the August 13 hurricane that caused approximately $11 billion in damage and killed at least six people.

Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda and Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers closed because of severe damage. The hospitals also reported that hundreds of employees suffered damage to their homes.

Staffing is an immediate concern for hospitals in the area. The Department for Health and Human Services announced on August 17 that it is providing nurses and other staff to assist two Florida hospitals in the wake of Hurricane Charley.

The Florida Hospital Association (FHA) said it is assessing affected hospitals' immediate needs. The FHA created a relief fund to help hospitals affected by the hurricane.
