First responders’ struggle for funding

Emergency Management Alert, August 24, 2004

Almost three years after the September 11 attacks, government officials report that first responders still don't have necessary funding for emergency responses, www.Govexec.com reports.

First responders need additional funding to improve communication, equipment, and technology. However, federal lawmakers, who pledged to seek the money after the September 11 attacks, question whether the money even exists.

A report published by the House Homeland Security Committee showed that first responders haven't received most of the $6.3 billion in federal aid for terrorism preparedness. About $5.2 billion in grant money is stuck in administrative areas, the report said.

First responders throughout the country report difficulties obtaining funding, as well as purchasing the equipment their state requires.

The report blames the multi-layered system to obtain funding as part of the problem.
