Four assisted-living homes in Duluth and Saginaw, MN, will close their doors by August 30, the Duluth News Tribune reported.
After $70,000 in remodeling expenses, the homes still couldn't achieve fire code approval. Safety codes require assisted-living homes caring for six to 16 people to be a single story for easy escape.
Fire Marshal Erik Simonson said for the centers to remain in two-story homes they must admit only residents capable of fleeing danger unaided, or must limit admissions to no more than five people.
