NC ready to use bioterrorism surveillance system

Emergency Management Alert, August 13, 2004

North Carolina will begin using an electronic surveillance system to monitor potential bioterrorism threats, the AHA News reported.

The North Carolina Division of Public Health and North Carolina Hospital Association partnered to track bioterrorism threats and other public health emergencies. The North Carolina Hospital Emergency Surveillance System will allow health officials to detect certain illnesses or symptoms from people in emergency departments.

"If an unusual trend surfaces, then we can look at that situation more closely and react quickly," said State Health Director Leah Devlin.

The system is expected to be operating by January 1.
