Federal investigators found serious deficiencies in 500 JCAHO-accredited facilities surveyed between 2000 and 2002, according to a government report released July 20.

JCAHO surveyors failed to find 167 of 241 compliance issues during the two-year span, according to the 58-page Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, prompting Sen. Charles Grassley, R-IA, and Rep. Pete Stark, D-CA, to develop legislation that would increase Medicare's authority over the JCAHO. Problems identified were predominantly related to fire safety and substandard care.

In 2002, the JCAHO accredited 82% of U.S. hospitals, which received $98 billion for Medicare-covered services that year, according to the GAO, Congress' investigative arm.
