Feds commit $100 million to rural emergency responders

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced last week that it will award $100 million, under the first responder directive, to help rural emergency responders prepare for terrorist attacks, the Delta Farm Press reports.

USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman said a minimum of one of every five dollars of fiscal year 2004 community facility funding available, will be dedicated to first responder type requests.

The Delta reports that the following types of projects are eligible: rescue and ambulance services, emergency response training, hospitals, physician clinics, outpatient care, early storm warning systems, county Health Department offices, migrant health centers, food preparation distribution center, communications centers, animal shelters, mobile communications centers, and education facilities for emergency responders.
