The Pennsylvania House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill that will give protection to anyone with privileges at a healthcare organization that reports a medical error.

The bill will allow Pennsylvania's Patient Safety Authority to establish a toll-free confidential hotline to collect and investigate serious events or incidents in hopes of increased reporting.  The authority can fine a healthcare facility up to $5,000 if it fails to respect the reporter's confidentiality.

The Senate must approve the bill, and Gov. Edward Rendell must sign it.

With the additional data, the authority will attempt to discover trends and flaws in the 400 healthcare facilities in Pennsylvania-including ambulatory surgery centers, birthing centers, and hospitals-to improve patient safety.
