NYC hospitals staff brace for convention

Emergency Management Alert, July 6, 2004

New York City trauma surgeons, emergency department nurses, and hospital administrators are advised not to take summer vacation during the Republican National Convention, the New York Times reports.

The convention, scheduled for August 30 through September 2, will attract 4,900 delegates, thousands of journalists, and protestors. For hospitals, this could mean problems ranging from heat stroke, protest injuries, or even a terrorist attack.

"In some of the hospitals, and this is informal and anecdotal, people are already being told that anybody who can avoid taking a vacation during the time of the convention should do so," said Irwin Redlener, MD, the founding director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University.

Hospital administrators haven't created an official "no-vacation" policy, but are reviewing vacation schedules to ensure adequate staffing.

The Greater New York Hospital Association also urged its members, especially the 78 hospitals in the five boroughs, to make similar reviews, the Times reports.
