Mayors say homeland security funding improving

Emergency Management Alert, July 6, 2004

Fifty-two percent of 231 cities still haven't received homeland security funding or any notification about grants, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors survey. This is the group's third survey, which assesses the flow of federal homeland security funds.

"While this report shows some improvement in certain areas, there are still too many cities who have not received homeland security funds, nor have been notified that they will receive money," Conference President and Hempstead, NY, Mayor James A. Garner told US Newswire. "As leaders of cities, we must be fully prepared to protect the homeland."

The first survey, released in September 2003, revealed that 90% of 168 surveyed cities hadn't received any federal funding. The second survey, released in January 2004, revealed that 76% of the 213 cities surveyed hadn't received any funding.
