The JCAHO introduced the Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery(tm)-a standardized set of operating room guidelines-July 1 in an effort to reduce surgical errors.
The protocol will consist of a preoperative verification process to confirm correct identity, a site-marking process to verify the right site, and a time out to confirm the correct patient, site, and procedure before the operation begins. The time out is considered important because it represents cooperation among physicians, nurses, and executives in an effort to improve patient safety, according to the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
In addition to the JCAHO, five other organizations have backed the Universal Protocol, including the AORN, the American Hospital Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.
