New test available to detect anthrax

Emergency Management Alert, June 22, 2004

The Food and Drug Administration approved the first test for detecting antibodies to anthrax last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced.

The Anthrax Quick ELISA test, produced by Immunetics Inc. of Boston and funded by CDC, provides an easy-to-use clinical laboratory tool for assessing whether anthrax infections are in patients. State and private laboratories will begin using the new test shortly, the CDC said.

In the past, few laboratories other than the CDC and U.S. Army tested blood for anthrax.

It takes less than an hour to complete the new test, compared to previous testing methods that took up to four hours.
