More communication needed among first responders
Emergency Management Alert, June 22, 2004
Responses to major disasters and terror attacks must be managed by first responders better for increased safety, according to a new study released last week, the Associated Press reports.
The study, released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Rand Corporation, says improving communication among multiple responding agencies will better develop response skills.
Key information for responses include what agents people are exposed to, the location, and what people are doing, says Brian Jackson, who works for the Rand Corporation. For example, he says, responders can better protect if they know what safety equipment is available.
Better coordination allows all responders to benefit from the expertise that various organizations bring to a disaster site, Jackson says.
