Feds award $849 million grant for public health preparedness
Emergency Management Alert, June 22, 2004
Department of Human and Health Services Secretary Tommy Thompson awarded $849 million to states, territories, and four metropolitan areas (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington) last week to help public health agencies respond to bioterror attacks, infectious diseases, and natural disasters.
"This funding is a critical component to our national security," Thompson said. "Our state and local public health system is the first line of defense when it comes to detection, reporting, and containing a terrorist attack, an infectious disease outbreak, or any other public health emergency."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grants are for public health and emergency response, although hospitals may benefit indirectly from funds used to improve linkages with public health partners.
