Panel advises NIH on clinical trial conflicts of interest
Emergency Management Alert, June 21, 2004
A blue-ribbon panel established to investigate allegations of conflicts of interest at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued its draft report that contains 18 recommendations aimed at reducing concerns over the issue.
The recommendations-which include steps such as prohibiting NIH senior managers from consulting with pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies and limiting consulting income to 50% of an employee's annual salary-were prompted by concerns raised in Congress and the media, according to the report.
Although relatively few NIH employees engage in consulting agreements with biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies, a substantial number of NIH employees are involved in activities with professional societies and academic research institutions, the report states.
The panel's recommendations were written with the ultimate goal of ensuring that no NIH employee would have a conflict that interfered with his or her official duties at NIH. To read a copy of the report go to www.nih.gov and click on "COI Panel Report" under "Medical Research Issues."
