A number of North Carolina hospitals are currently undergoing patient-safety initiatives, The Business Journal (Greensboro, NC) reports.
In addition, the North Carolina Medical Society recently established a task force to address improvements in patient safety.
In Greensboro, the Moses Cone Health System hired a patient-safety officer and an executive in charge of quality, both firsts for that hospital system. The High Point Regional Health System in High Point appointed its first chief medical officer to specifically improve patient safety and quality.
"The whole industry is moving aggressively, trying to make sure all of our patients are safe," Greg Taylor, MD, chief medical officer at High Point Regional told the Journal. "We're concerned about large jury verdicts that could do harm to the health system and our ability to render care to other patients in the community."
Some North Carolina healthcare providers say that malpractice lawsuits have prompted the increased emphasis on patient-safety initiatives.
