A key study provides strong proof that accredited outpatient surgeries have an overall safety record comparable to hospital surgeries, according to the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).

The AAAASF collected data through an Internet-based reporting program from 621 AAAASF-accredited surgery centers over a two-year period, documenting outcomes from 411,670 surgical procedures.

A total of eight deaths-one in 51,459 procedures-were reported, a ratio equivalent to hospital surgery facilities. Of the eight deaths, however, six were related to pulmonary embolism, which can occur as the result of any surgical procedure, according to the AAAASF.
