U.S. more prepared for bioterrorism attack, experts say
Emergency Management Alert, June 8, 2004
Experts agreed a bioterrorist attack in the U.S. is inevitable but that the nation would likely be able to and create an organized response, according to the DemocratandChronicle.com.
At the Rochester, NY, symposium last week, Peter L. Estacio, senior medical adviser to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the country is better prepared to respond to bioterrorism. The gathering, which drew about 100 people to an auditorium at the University of Rochester Medical Center, was sponsored by UR's new Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Preparedness.
"Things will be better. But is that good enough? We won't know until there is another event," Estacio said.
The presidential directives and the development of homeland security should alleviate any previous confusion among governmental officials-which occurred during the anthrax letter episodes in 2001, Estacio said.
