First responder training available online
Emergency Management Alert, June 8, 2004
The U.S. Agriculture Department launched a Web-based incident command system (ICS) training program last week for first responders to improve the department's effectiveness during emergencies, such as wildfires or bioterror attacks, according to Government Computer News.
"This ICS training will help bolster resources to manage accidental or deliberate incidents that may threaten the U.S. food supply, critical infrastructure, or economy," said agriculture secretary Ann Veneman. The training program, which is from the Homeland Security Department, is similar to the agriculture department's forest service command system.
The ICS is a standard incident management structure, including command, operations, planning, logistics, and finance and administration. The courses describe the responsibilities at different management levels.
The incident command courses are available through GoLearn, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's e-government training platform.
