Experts discuss reviewing your hospital lockdown plan
Emergency Management Alert, June 1, 2004
HSEM spoke to hospital security directors Earl Williams, HSP, safety coordinator for BroMenn Healthcare in Bloomington, IL, and Bonnie Michelman, CPP, CHPA, director of police, security, and outside services for Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, regarding hospital lockdowns. Both offered perspectives on lockdowns from their different experiences.
"Almost like emergency preparedness, you need to be able to stand on your own for 72 hours," Williams says. "Consider what resources you have. If you can lock the outside perimeter doors, how many security officers will you need? You may have to change security from within your facility as well."
"I think hospitals should rarely use lockdowns and only when absolutely necessary and not as a protocol for common risks hospitals face, like disgruntled employees or patients," Michelman says. "It's too intrusive to hospital operations."
