Two Virginia ambulatory centers are among a number of organizations in the Roanoke Valley participating in a program to give free healthcare for uninsured residents.

The Roanoke (VA) Ambulatory Surgery Center and the Roanoke Valley Center for Sight, a same-day eye surgery center in Salem, VA, began participating in Project Access in early May. The program allows uninsured patients to receive examinations, tests, drugs, and surgery at free and reduced rates.

The Virginia Health Care Foundation estimates that 30,000 uninsured people live in the Roanoke Valley. The uninsured would have to meet income-based criteria to join Project Access.

The Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine raised $90,000 to start the program. Physicians in Asheville, NC, say they established the first volunteer physician network in 1996. Since then, 25 other locations have started a Project Access.
