A May 12 fire on the roof of Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ontario, forced the evacuation of about 100 patients and staff, the Kitchener-Waterloo Record reports.

Firefighters were able to quickly control the blaze, which began just after 5 p.m. in a pile of construction materials on the roof of a three-story wing that is under renovation.

Flames shot up from the site, sending smoke into the third floor of the hospital. No injuries were reported. The fire never entered the building, but a special testing room on the third floor sustained smoke damage.

When firefighters arrived, hospital staff had already begun the evacuation. About 60 to 70 patients and half as many staff members had to leave the renal dialysis unit and a part of the emergency room.
