A former nurse on April 29 pleaded guilty to committing at least 14 murders with lethal injections in hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania over the past decade, the New York Times reports.

In the county courthouse in Somerville, NJ, Charles Cullen admitted he intentionally killed at least 14 patients, 13 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville and one at Easton (PA) Hospital. He has also admitted to two cases of attempted murder.

Cullen's plea agreement spared him the possibility of being executed. He agreed to 13 life sentences in prison, and also to cooperate with prosecutors in the five other counties where he worked as a nurse to help them determine whom he killed there. In a December interview with authorities, Cullen said he killed as many as 40 patients, but investigators need his help because he worked in many hospitals and nursing homes over his career.
