A resident of the A. Holly Patterson Geriatric Center nursing home in Uniondale, NY, died May 2 after falling at the facility, which is currently under state and federal investigation for lapses in patient care, Newsday reports.
The 41-year-old man died at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. The state health department is investigating the death.
Officials from the nursing home did not release the man's identity or the circumstances of his death, but sources told Newsday that the man, who weighed about 300 pounds and required constant physical care, may have fallen out of bed or while staffers were bathing him early on May 2.
The 889-bed A. Holly Patterson facility is New York state's largest suburban nursing home. In January 2003, the United States Justice Department began probing "systemic violations" of residents' civil rights, including their care and treatment. In April 2003, after receiving complaints about the home's methods, the state health department began an inquiry into how the center reports incidents involving the health and safety of residents.
In October, the department asked the federal government to deny Medicare and Medicaid payments for new patients until after the facility cleared up five major violations for mold. A state inspection also found that nursing supplies were not stored under sanitary conditions.
