Michigan hospitals test bioterrorism tracking program
Emergency Management Alert, April 19, 2004
Nine Michigan hospitals are piloting a program to track potential bioterrorism attacks, infectious disease outbreaks, and other public health emergencies, according to the American Hospital Association.
The syndromic surveillance system focuses on collecting information from hospitals to provide early detection and intervention of bioterrorism outbreaks.
If the system detects an outbreak or emergency, an automated response is sent to epidemiologists at the Michigan Department of Community Health, which will then analyze and investigate the findings.
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association helped coordinate the effort, which will include more hospitals later this year. A steering committee made up of MDCH representatives, local health departments, regional hospital bioterrorism coordinators and medical directors, and participating facilities guide the pilot program.
The National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program of HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded the program. For more information on the program, visit http://www.hrsa.gov/bioterrorism/
